EUROPA - THE UNITED STATES OF EUROPE?
The idea is simple: to travel around the member states of the European Union
and photograph as many border crossings as possible. That is, the borders
they share with one another and those shared with their non-EU neighbours.
These borders are already becoming increasingly irrelevant - how many times
have you seen any officials at continental border posts let alone had your
passport/documents checked?
I want to photograph these places before they become totally redundant and
merely monuments to an older European order. It will be, in part travelogue,
part social and political documentary.
The photography will concern itself with the people of these areas as well as
the border crossings themselves; with the remote mountain passes as well
as the autoroute checkpoints.
I intend to make the journey by motorcycle. I will also be making a digital video
with a camera mounted to the bike as I pass through these borders; this will
later be edited together and shown as a continuous loop film at the
subsequent exhibition. I also intend to produce a book of these images.
